Swimming is one of most ancient games practiced by mankind. It is also one of most interesting and useful sports due to moving all body organs on practicing this sport in resisting water. Swimming means man's ability to move in water medium through moving legs and arms.

Swimming styles and techniques:

Swimming has different techniques undertaken by an individual in order to be able to move from a point to another easily. These techniques include:

 

Freestyle Swimming: where a swimmer can move legs and arms interchangeably with maintaining horizontal position on water surface. In free swimming, a swimmer can swim using the technique they feel comfortable. However, in various relays and individual medley races, a swimmer should swim using a technique different from chest, back and butterfly swimming techniques.

 

Breaststroke Swimming: where a swimmer uniformly moves legs and arms in frog-like movements. It is a recreational swimming. In breaststroke swimming, a swimmer wades into water with their chest contacting water and their shoulders are on one line with water surface. The swimmer should show part of their head above water and get their mouth out from time to time for breathing. A swimmer can freely perform at the race beginning and upon turning round.

Backstroke Swimming: this swimming is significantly similar to freestyle swimming but a swimmer is posed on their back and moves legs and arms interchangeably. In backstroke swimming, a swimmer starts off by kicking their foot against the pool wall at the beginning and also during turning around. The swimmer swims on their back throughout the race. Back swimming races are 100m, 200m and 50 meters.

 

Butterfly swimming: it is the movement of arms together along with moving legs and body simultaneously in dolphin wise manner. In butterfly swimming, a swimmer hits water with his arms forward and above water level, then pushes them back together and repeats this movement continuously.

Swimming benefits:

  • Water represents resistance for muscles when we practice swimming. Therefore, swimming is one of best sports for strengthening muscles and maintaining slender stature.
  • Health and sporting research indicates that practicing swimming for 30 minutes per day reduces hypertension, strengthen heart and reduces cholesterol level in blood as well as increasing blood circulation efficiency.
  • Practicing swimming for one hour will burn 250-500 calories depending on swimming strength and speed. Therefore, this sport is ideal for weight loss.
  • Swimming is very useful for eliminating psychological stress and providing relaxation for body and mind as well as enhancing morale.
  • Water makes body seeming lighter than actual weight. Therefore, swimming is one of most suitable sports for with overweight people.
  • Swimming relaxes muscles in arms and legs.
  • Swimming makes heart and lungs in good air condition.
  • Swimming is useful for eliminating hidden and apparent wounds and bruises.

Swimming risks:

Don't swim after eating because swimming will result in blood flowing into limbs and reduces blood amount going to stomach and digestive system. This hinders and delays digestion process and causes indigestion. Further, swimming risks include muscle tension which would result in death.
